In July, we took part of the (!sold out!) Macrame Workshop with Zoe Perez of Clove + Couple at Space 24 Twenty. Seventeen macrame builders finished out with our Plant Bar after completing their macrame plant holder. Chameleon Cold Brew and Snap Kitchen donated delicious jive and bites
- Zoe had four different colors to choose from, after selecting their color of Macrame (there was a dark mint green, dusty rose and mustard yellow to choose from) students were taken step by step through the process, taking about an hour and a half from beginning to end. At the end of our workshop, each person had the opportunity to select a plant and pottery from our Plant Bar to fit each of their hangers.
With proper food and water + sun and plenty of carbon! :)
🌿be a plant (but you may want to replace carbon with oxygen)
Wanted to mention how very thankful I am to you all for making last year such a success for Slavonk & Hortus and our Terrarium Bar. I hope to continue to share with you the gift of creativity and inviting green into your home. 💸Together we were able to make a $70 donation to #safeplaceaustin thanks to your support of our recent Holiday Block Party with our #East11th friends & fam.
You're all so special to make both these former ideas possible.
Glassware: Lead Head Glass Terrariums

We gratefully found Chad & Derek and their Lead Head Glassware through Instagram and have been creating in their creations, in the shop, the last two years. The history of terrariums dates back to the 1880s with Wardian cases. These cases were originally used to transport exotic plants around the world. LHG modeled their glassware after these cases. Lead Head makes their products out of reclaimed glass and wood from deconstructed homes in Detroit. There's an unfurling level of magic and history to their wonderful product. They only use responsibly sourced materials and each terrarium is made to order, by hand.
Another key note to mention, glass bottles are recyclable, but window panes, not so much.
This upcycling is just the thing we'd ever hope for in a product.

We were lucky enough to sit down with the founders of Lead Head Glass, Chad and Derek to discuss their work.

Slavonk & Hortus: How did you get involved with your craft?
Lead Head Glass: “We were always involved with design in our previous careers. However it was a hobby that we played with on occasion. Chad studied design and I continued to work on technique.“
S&L: Where did the idea to take materials from deconstructed homes come from?
LHG: “Using deconstructed material is increasingly important. The glass we use cannot be recycled so it always ends up in a landfill. We made a commitment early to this process. From day one we sought out to create a company that we would want to work at both physically and mentally. If there is a choice of materials, using beautiful reclaimed wood and glass as opposed to machine manufactured new material wasn't a hard decision.“

S&L: How would you describe your partnerships with other stores?
LHG: “We love our stores. Absolutely we feel a connection to 100% of the people we partner with. We do sell online but customers always find a savings in our stores.

"Under the same philosophy as using special materials we choose to work with special people. People who you can hear smiles from and true interest over the phone. We adore and are very protective of our "homes"."

In case, y’all haven’t noticed we’ve moved from South to East and we couldn’t be more excited! We chose this neighborhood because so much talent, artists, great boutiques and eateries surround it. The neighborhood feels like a bunch of neighborhoods in Brooklyn, very similar to the vibe in Williamsburg. We love New York and if our home wasn’t in Austin, we might be there. It's like a colony of busy bees, the mecca of the hardworking first Americans, the initiators and culture creators.
And just because we have different zip code doesn’t mean we are out with the old. Our terrarium bar is open to build DIY terrariums anytime during our business hours. We offer workshops every Thursday night paired with wine and cheese (who doesn’t love that). Our workshops are great for team building, bachelorettes, or just a fun activity with your friends and family. Find our hours and locations below and stay tuned for more blogs highlighting our events, local artists and where we get our gorgeous glassware. We hope to see you soon!
